The beautiful village of Portaria is
one of the most popular in all of Pelion. It is located just 13
km from the city of Volos, but at it's altitude of 650m, you will
feel as though you are in a very secluded and intimate place.
With stunning views towards the city of Volos and the Pagasitic
Gulf, there are some truly beautiful spots from which you can see
far beyond Volos and outwards to sea.
The village of Portaria is also perfectly located, giving visitors
to the region the perfect base from which to venture out and explore. The
village of Makrinitsa neighbours with Portaria, and here you can
enjoy what is commonly known as the "Balcony of Pelion",
with views stretching out over Volos as far as the eye can see..

of the country during WW2.
It is still worth visiting the ruins of this once impressive hotel,
to develope a sense of it's beauty and grandness.. |

The Byzantine monastery of Agios Ioannis Prothromos, which is on
the road leading to Makrinitsa, houses some very beautiful Byzantine
icons and decorations.
Portaria is also a lovely village from which to explore and take
interesting walks. There are several water springs in the village,
which provide a refreshing cool drink during the hot summer months.
